BBC Radio 3 | New Music Show: Kronos Quartet at 50

Released on 17 Feb 2024, available for 29 days

Tom Service presents the best in new music performance, including highlights from a recent concert by the legendary Kronos Quartet, who are celebrating their 50th year of playing new music, with over a thousand commissions to their name.

We’ve a preview of an upcoming release now from the ensemble Ruthless Jabiru’s album Girl, of the British Iranian composer Soosan Lolavar’s music conducted by Kelly Lovelady. This is Soosan’s I am the Spring, You are the Earth: music in which the sounds of the Iranian santoor, a hammered dulcimer played here by Faraz Eshghi Sahraei, are at the centre of a piece in which the delicate balance between what’s written and what’s improvised gives this music a sense of infinitely-present unfurling; made anew in each new performance and each new listening. And this is the piece on the album, as the release says, which most closely represents Lolavar’s own emerging sense of diasporic identity. Music that finds itself then in its searching…
